A BILL OF RIGHTS FOR OUR FUTURE

08: The Right To

FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

All people shall be afforded the knowledge and access necessary to control their financial future.

Vision By:

Rosario Marín

Grounded in her experience as an immigrant, a banker, and a public servant, this right reflects Rosario Marín’s conviction that financial independence is not about wealth, but about dignity, autonomy, and survival with integrity.

Financial independence is the ability to make choices, to protect oneself, and to build stability without reliance on another person or institution for survival. It is not about status or accumulation. It is about dignity, security, and autonomy. A society that values freedom must ensure that every person has the knowledge and access necessary to control their financial future.

Financial independence begins with understanding. Without education about money, credit, savings, and financial systems, people remain vulnerable. Knowledge determines whether someone can open an account, build credit, protect their income, recover from hardship, or plan for the future. Without this foundation, independence becomes an illusion.

As an immigrant and as a woman working in banking and public service, I saw clearly how powerfully financial systems shape people’s lives. I saw how access to knowledge could create stability, and how exclusion from that knowledge could leave people exposed. I learned that independence is not simply personal effort. It is deeply shaped by whether systems are understandable, fair, and accessible.

Financial systems are imperfect, but they are the systems through which the world functions. People should be equipped to navigate them with confidence rather than fear. This requires education, transparency, and fair treatment. It requires recognizing women and underserved communities not as risks, but as capable economic actors.

Financial independence is also protection. It allows people to leave unsafe situations, to stand on their own in moments of transition, and to make decisions from strength rather than desperation. Especially for women, independence is not isolation. It is the foundation of equal partnership and full participation in society.

This right does not promise wealth. It promises agency. It promises the ability to build stability, to plan with intention, and to face uncertainty with resilience. When people understand and control their financial lives, families become stronger, communities become more stable, and democracy becomes more grounded in real freedom.

To affirm the right to financial independence is to affirm that dignity begins with autonomy. Freedom is not only political. It is economic. And when people can stand on their own, they contribute not just to their own security, but to the strength and integrity of the nation.
